About the Role
Overview
The Senior Manager, Accounting maintains financial reports and general ledgers for the international entities of both Major League Soccer and Soccer United Marketing. This position is responsible for preparing and analyzing monthly financial statements and providing accounting support to the Finance Department. In addition, the position will manage or assist others in the quarterly consolidations of all the companies, including the management of player-related quarter end consolidation and cash flow work. In addition, the position will manage various accounting related projects for the CFO/CAO.
Responsibilities
Major League Soccer and Soccer United Limited international entities:
- Manage month end close and preparation of financial statements
- Assist with quarterly consolidations for bank reporting requirements
- Manage accounting of sponsorship, broadcasting and licensing revenues
- Manage ticket reconciliation for all regular season and playoff matches related to Canada
- Responsible for international entities and their close/reporting and communication with third party accountants
- Ensure that tax and legal requirements are met on a timely basis, and liaise with the tax department on all necessary financial information
- Manage third party accountants to ensure timely billing and collection of cash
- Manage the annual financial statement process, focusing on tighter timelines by managing reconciliations throughout the year with the local accountants
- Manage balance sheet reconciliations and account analyses
- Process, review and record monthly journal entries and accruals
Other roles:
- Project-based settlement accounting and management (FMF, Gold Cup & Leagues Cup)
- Project based accounting and financial projects, as determined by the CFO/CAO
- Manage the quarterly cash flow process for MLS, particularly as it relates to player-related accounting and cash flows.
- Assist in year-end audit, including working on accounting for ASC 606
- Assist in the review of MLS cash flow forecast
- Assist with tax filings/government census surveys
- Work with the tax department to standardize accounting delivery of tax information and reports, including the annual tax trial balance and support
- Assist with implementation of new general ledger software
- Accomplish team results by communicating job expectations and managing the Performance Management process:
- Plan, monitor, and review performance.
- Coach and counsel employees;
- Develop and implement department procedures and productivity standards and reinforce Company policies
- Develop personal growth opportunities for employees
- Additional responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance required
- 7+ years of experience in accounting/finance
Required Skills
- Superior organization, project management skills and attention to detail

- Ability to work effectively in a fast paced, team environment
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate, both written and verbally
- High proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

- Detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
- Ability to travel and to work non-traditional hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
Desired Skills
- Experience with Microsoft Dynamics GP (Great Plains) or similar accounting software a plus
- Experience with Hyperion Essbase/SmartView or similar financial reporting software a plus
- Experience with Concur a plus
- Knowledge of the sport of soccer
